OBITUARY

Mattie Solomon was born on September 10, 1935, in Nutbush, North Carolina to the late
John and Pheobe Solomon. She departed this life on March 3, 2025, at her home in
Riverhead, New York. Mattie lived a remarkable life spanning for 89 years, leaving behind
a legacy of love, resilience, and cherished memories. Mattie grew up in an era of great
change, witnessing and contributing to the evolving tapestry of her community.
Throughout her life, she was known for her unwavering kindness, generosity, and
dedication to her family, friends, and church family. Her home in Riverhead was a
sanctuary of warmth and happiness, filled with laughter, stories, and the aroma of her
famous home-cooked meals.
Mattie graduated from Riverhead High School in 1954. Over the years, she had held
positions and titles with various companies including a sewing factory in Riverhead, New
York and a Duck plant in Eastport, New York. Her career of a remarkable 25 years at
Brookhaven National Laboratory, in Upton, New York, is a testament to dedication and
expertise in her field of Stores Keeper. As she transitioned into retirement, she left behind
a legacy of hard work and commitment. Mattie attended the Friendship Baptist Church in
Riverhead where she held various positions. In the recent years, preceding her death, she
was a member of New Jerusalem Baptist Church in Brentwood, New York, where she was
the President of the Pastor’s Aide Board, a member of the Usher Board and a member of
numerous choirs. Mattie loved playing softball, tackling crossword puzzles, and enjoying
cowboy movies.
Mattie had a way of making her feelings known, and it was no secret when she liked
someone or when she didn’t. Her warmth and friendliness made you feel like you were
the only person in the room, if you were on her good side. She had an infectious laugh and
a knack for conversation that made people gravitate towards her. People respected Mattie
for her honesty, even if sometimes it stung, because they knew exactly where they stood
with her. Her ability to be genuine in her emotions was both a strength and a hallmark of
her character.
Mattie was predeceased by her parents, John and Pheobe Solomon, one sister Jennie
Faines, two grandchildren Caprice Langhorne and Charles Brown Jr., one great-grandson
Corey Woodley Jr, and one fur grand-daughter, Pepper. She is lovingly remembered and
survived by her two siblings: her brother, John Solomon (Mattie) of Fayetteville, North
Carolina, and her sister, Mary McCoy, of Eden, North Carolina. Her legacy continues
through her two children, Barbara Langhorne of Riverhead, New York and Charles Brown
of Warner Robins, Georgia. She was a proud grandmother to five grandchildren:
Carmecha and Crischelle Langhorne of Riverhead, New York; Constance Brown of
Weldon, North Carolina, Avery Boynton in Maryland and Zana Mayes of Warner Robins,
Georgia. Her family tree extends further with three cherished Great-Grandchildren:
Amari Langhorne of Riverhead, New York, Zo’Meire and Serenity Mayes of Warner
Robins, Georgia; Three God-Children: Lisa McClasin of Charlotte, North Carolina,
Winona Echols of Bayshore, New York and William Saunders in Florida; and a
nephew/grandchild, Maurice McCoy of Raleigh, North Carolina.
Mattie leaves behind a profound impact on those who had the privilege to know her,
reminding us all of the importance of family, love, community, and the simple joys in
life. Her memory will continue to inspire and guide her loved ones for generations to
come and will be treasured by all who knew her.

We are grateful for the opportunity to celebrate the life of our beloved Mattie Brown with our cherished friends and family.
